European Commissioner Micallef promised support for the battle of the European League with FIFA
September 19 – Glenn Micallef, Commissioner of Europe for Justice between Generations, Youth, Culture and Sports, has given support to the European League Association and the role of league key as a stakeholder in European games and ensures its sustainability.
European leagues met in Brussels for their first direct meeting in the new season.
The League Agency with the FIFPRO Europe player union has submitted a joint complaint to the European Commission regarding FIFA’s unilateral decision on the international match calendar.
European League Association and World League Association Both have been expelled from a discussion of stakeholders with FIFA about the main calendar issues that affect the integrity of league sports and their clubs. So far FIFA does not show a tendency to bring them significantly to the discussion table.
Commissioner of Micallef (right picture), talking about the importance of protecting the league in Europe, said: “Their contribution to Europe is far further than the soccer field and as European commissioners responsible for sports, I am very proud to see them taking a proactive role in promoting the key values of our unity through their work.
“My commitment to continue to support the leagues remains firm and unshakeable. Strategic discussions about the future of European football are needed – where we join all stakeholders to anchor financial sustainability and good governance as a basis for ensuring competitive balance in competition, justice and integrity, and the best interests of our society.”
European leagues show their position as “the backbone of the entire soccer pyramid in Europe” and often call for an inclusive and transparent governance model that will see the league represented in the football decision making agency.
The League emphasized their support for the commissioner’s agenda to protect European sports models, “which is rooted in solidarity, integrity, sports services, and competition openness”.
FIFA sees it very differently because it is very trying to build its relevance in club games throughout the world.
Where European leagues are focused on problems that affect long-term sports and financial stability and competitiveness of European football, FIFA seems to want to be muscular in the head of the table both in terms of political control and financial dominance. European football does not want to let FIFA ‘lunch their’ as easy as FIFA believes it can be through exception.
Claudius Schäfer (left photo), the President of the European League, said that the meeting with Micallef: “We share the same desire for football and the purpose of increasing our game governance that brings joy and excitement for millions of European citizens.”
The discussion was also held with representatives from Fifpro Europe, Union of European Clubs (UEC) and supporters of European football (FSE).
