Infantino urged the world to support Trump and his Peace Council

23 January – FIFA president Gianni Infantino has pledged FIFA’s full support to the new Peace Council set up by US president Donald Trump.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Infantino said: “FIFA gives its full support to President Trump and all the members of the Peace Council. We must support peace. We must unite people.”

On Thursday, Trump launched his peace council, intended to promote peace and determine Gaza’s future. Infantino attended the signing. In recent months, Trump has withdrawn the United States from major international cooperation agreements and organizations and he threatened to take over Greenland before repeating his Davos speech.

However, Infantino’s admiration for the American president remains unchanged. A number of countries on Trump’s peace council also have ties to the FIFA president, including Saudi Arabia. Russia, Egypt and Israel were also mentioned as possible participants in the council. They adhere to non-democratic ideals.

The United Arab Emirates also signed up to Trump’s council. Manchester City chairman and City Football Group chairman, Khaldoon Al-Mubarak, represented the Gulf nation.

Although soccer officials in Europe are reportedly concerned about Trump’s desire to annex Greenland, no official has criticized Infantino’s continued support for Trump and the MAGA movement.

Infantino’s cheerleading for the peace council puts FIFA in an awkward position.

The Trump-led Peace Council was seen as an attack on the UN and the post-war international order. However, after the World Cup in Qatar, as part of its $50 million dollar legacy fund, FIFA signed a partnership with two UN agencies – the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNHCR.

Trump completed the US withdrawal from the WHO today, and reportedly owes the organization $130 million.
