Man Utd sacked Ruben Amorim after 14 months

January 5 – Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United ends after just 14 months, brought to an end by a widening dispute between the head coach and the club’s hierarchy over transfers, authority and direction.

The Portuguese coach departs after a tumultuous final week in which his frustration boiled over.

After Sunday’s draw at Leeds, Amorim explained that he felt undervalued by the club’s recruitment department, stating that they needed to “do their job” and hinting that his influence at Old Trafford was rapidly eroding.

Personally, those comments got a bad rap. In public, they proved terminal.

Amorim believes United are ready to act in January if the right players are available. That assumption was quickly dismantled. Last Friday, he admitted there was “no talk” of squad changes, a stark contrast to his previous assurances.

His relationship with director of football Jason Wilcox became strained, and the impasse worsened after Amorim was informed of the club’s cautious transfer stance.

After the game against Leeds, Amorim was adamant that he would not resign, bluntly stating that he had come to United to be a “manager”, not just a coach, despite his job title being renamed. He also argues that external voices are now more influential than his own, citing the influence of expert criticism in his decision-making.

United acted quickly. A brief statement on Monday confirmed that Amorim had “stepped aside from his role,” thanking him for his service and wishing him the best. Internally, concerns are growing that his preferred 3-4-3 system – and the specific profile required to maintain it – could hold the club back if results decline again.

They’ve done it. Amorim finished 15th in the league last season, losing the Europa League final and winning just 15 of 46 Premier League games.

Amorim leaves the club in sixth place in the league, level with Chelsea who also sacked their manager last week, and three points adrift of a Champions League slot. They have won three of their last six matches, drawing two and losing one.

Like Chelsea, Man Utd said the focus for the season is now on achieving a strong league position.

“The club’s leadership have reluctantly taken the decision that the time is right to make a change. This will give the team the best chance of finishing as high as possible in the Premier League,” the club said in a statement.

Massive spending failed to create coherence, while tactical intransigence remained contentious throughout his tenure.

The club spent around £260 million while Amorim was in charge, including the signings of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.

Darren Fletcher will take over against Burnley on Wednesday as United begin, once again, the search for the next solution in a post-Ferguson management cycle that shows no signs of slowing.
