Orioles Mailbag: Who is the most guilty for surprising 13-23 starting?
Baltimore reporter Sun Orioles Jacob Calvin Meyer will answer fans’ questions every Friday during the baseball season. The following is JCM’s thoughts about some questions from readers:

When did you realistically think that people began to be fired? – @urbasalec on x
This week, Texas Rangers fired their coaches who hit and Pittsburgh Pirates fired their managers.
Is it possible too early to send people packing? Possible. But if other teams do it, naturally for some Orioles fans wondered if the same thing can happen in Baltimore. National attention at the beginning of the lifeless Orioles-13-23 and the brand of baseball that did not attract-attractive pressure on Brandon Hyde manager and General Manager Mike Elias. That’s the life in that work.
It is not the duty of a reporter to argue on these topics. So let’s stay with just a fact here.
Entering 2025, Orioles came out of three consecutive seasons for the first time from 2012 to 2014, the playoff performances were successive for the first time from 1996-97 and two 90-Plus-win campaigns respectively for the first time from 1982-83. While each of the two previous seasons ended with a gedebuk sound in October, Orioles was the American League winning team from 2023 to 2024.
However, in 2025, Orioles was more like their team during rebuilding. Baltimore entered Thursday with the worst differential running (minus-66), the pitcher era (5.50) and ops with runners in the assessment position (0.573) in Al. The only MLB team with a worse record than Orioles is Pirates, who has fired their manager; White Sox, who lost 121 matches last season; And Rockies, who can break the record of the Modern White Sox era this year.
And, finally, it is important not to forget that there is no action, still, an action. Houston Astros did not fire the first year manager Joe Espada last season in the early 7-19, and they ended the year as the division champion. The 2019 Washington Nationals did not fire Davey Martinez in the early 19-31, and they won the World Series. The same thing can be said for the opposite. Philadelphia Phillies 2022 fired Joe Girardi in June after the early 22-29, and Rob Thomson helped lead the team to win the National League Panji.
It takes us to the next question.
Does Mike Elias need to make drastic movements? – @kobiruark on x
This is technically not Kobi’s question. He was printed into this, but the original prompt included the phrase “whatever needed.” This type of mindset, one of the drastic steps, feels the antithesis of the measured and pragmatic approach from Elias’s front office – good or bad.
The last time Elias made what that could be freely characterized as a “drastic” step was offseason past when the organization parted with the bench coach Fredi González, Main League coach José Hernández, athletic chief coach Brian Ebel and hit coach Matt Borgschulte and Ryan Fuller. Through 36 matches without those people, Orioles has played a lack of disciplined baseball, their injury is even worse than last season and violations are the last effective at MLB.
Correlation is not the same as the cause. But change after change does not automatically make everything better. Orioles problems are more complex than this simple discourse.
What is the philosophy of the organization that hit? – @bmorelite on x
The first year coach hit Cody Asche was asked during this spring training. This is part of the answer:
“Fans at home, I promise you, we preach the philosophy of baseball and things that have been successful in this game for 200 years – from Ted Williams to Pete Rose to Tony Gwynn,” Asche said. “We all try to get a good tone, we all try to reach the hard line drive.”
Okay, so let’s look at how the results: Orioles ranked 26th out of 30 MLB teams in the drive line level, according to StatCast, after the ninth ranking in the metric in 2024.
Some fans are bored with homer-retliant violations from Orioles last season when the team declined in the second half. The struggle (and scoring one round combined in two postseason matches) produced an organization that separated from Borgschulte and Fuller, promoting Asche and Assistant Coach Sherman Johnson and employed the assistant coach hitting Tommy Joseph Offseason. It was not a seismic shift from the philosophy of the organization’s blow, but rather a hoarse from the deck.
From 2022 to 2024 under Borgschulte and Fuller, Orioles is ranked eighth in MLB in scoring 4.7 running per match, fourth in Ops+-an offensive metric that is adjusted to the garden relative to the league where 100 averages 108 and 10 in the ops with runners in printing positions at .762.
As far as this season (entering Thursday), Orioles ranks -244 in scoring 3.6 running per game, 15th in Ops+ on 98 (2% below average) and 30 in Ops with runners in printing positions at 0.573.
Maybe this is more about the players than the coaches.
What will be the next round of renovation and addition for Camden Yards Offseason? – Jack L.
Two major changes made to Oriole Park Offseason are new videoboard (and bigger) and new sound systems (and harder). While Camden Yards remains one of the MLB gems of the Baseball Stadium, small videoboard and sound systems that are difficult to be based are the two biggest weaknesses. The temporary voice system was implemented for the 2025 season, and the new team released the new video rendering that will be in front of the 2026 campaign.

Who is the most guilty for the beginning of 13-23 Orioles? – Christopher D. In Baltimore
Is that a support to say everyone? Well, maybe not everyone. That’s not your fault, Christopher. But everyone ranging from Elias to the players to owners David Rubenstein and HYDE managers deserve a piece of this mistake – maybe in that order.
There is no hiding from this. Orioles (at this time) is a bad baseball team. That does not mean they will be tomorrow, or in a week, or a month. That does not mean that the season is over or that Orioles cannot return to the battle in the middle AL. But what fans have consumed for most of the last six weeks are bad baseball.
This space is not intended to be therapeutic. Far above my salary value to become a fan of Baltimore. But the best word to describe the beginning of this season – and fans’ feelings about it – is “sadness.”
Of course, your favorite baseball team has a bad month which is not comparable to the loss of loved ones or dealing with breaking up. But Orioles fans felt as if they had lost something this spring: the belief that their team was in the right direction.
A little less than seven years ago, Orioles had returned to a cliff, and as a result, they traded most of their best players – including Hall of Famer Manny Machado in the future – to start rebuilding. The Angelos family employs Mike Elias to reserve it rebuilding, and that’s when the social contract between franchises and fan bases made. The team asked fans to wait patiently because the front office deliberately put the product losing on the field, because once the rebuilding ended, Orioles would have everything needed to compete for the championship. Rebuilding is seen as success with three consecutive seasons from 2022 to 2024, but early 13-23 for this threatened to close the Baltimore World Series window before it was even opened.
About 55 years ago, Psychiatrist Elisabeth Küber-Ross introduced five stages of sadness. The first is rejection. Explain other Playoff sweeping, offseason without splash and slow start will be in accordance with the description. The next stage is anger. It seems that there are fans now.
The question now is whether Orioles fans have to turn to negotiations, depression and receipts – the last three stages – or will the club give them a reason to believe again?
