Ravens TE Isaiah Possible reacts to Mark Andrews’ contract extension
Imagine being in a room with several colleagues, you all have the same job and the contract is about to expire. Some may be more skilled than others, but others are younger and have the potential to offer longer careers.
This is the world the Ravens’ Mark Andrews, Isaiah Likely, and Charlie Kolar are living in this season, and it’s the type of scenario that could ruin the dynamic between the group and possibly the locker room.
Then on Wednesday, Baltimore made a somewhat surprising decision, giving Andrews a three-year, $39.3 million contract extension that included $26 million guaranteed. The deal makes the 30-year-old the sixth-highest paid player at his position in the league and will keep him in Baltimore through the 2028 season.
The possible reaction?
She said she was “gassed” and sent a text to Andrews telling him she loved him, was proud of him, and they still had a lot of work to do.
“I just see my sister getting paid, so I just enjoy it,” he said, Thursday.
The deal also means that the futures of Likely, 25, and Kolar, 26, both in the final year of their rookie contracts, are suddenly much bleaker than they were a few months ago.
It didn’t help that they didn’t put up the numbers some expected – especially Possible, who also missed the first three games of the season after breaking a bone in his foot during training camp. Since returning, he has had just 18 catches for 223 yards and no touchdowns in nine games. Kolar, meanwhile, has just eight catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns this season.
This past offseason, Baltimore entertained the idea of a trade offer for Andrews, who was in his eighth season and had seen declining production over the past few seasons.
But a proper agreement never materialized. Now both of them get married in the future.
This is something that makes Andrews, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, one-time All-Pro, and the franchise leader in catches, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns, very happy.
“Very grateful, very excited for this moment,” he said. “It means a lot to be a part of this organization and a part of this community, this city. Having just been drafted here eight years ago, it means a lot to me to be able to get on the field to battle and compete with these guys and this team. I couldn’t ask for a better situation.”
The signing caps off a busy week for Oklahoma’s 2018 third-round draft pick after he got engaged last week.
The agreement was also reached within a span of two weeks.
“It feels like four years ago,” he said, referring to his contract extension in 2021. “It happened very quickly.”
Even so, it requires patience, he added. Andrews never chose to accept free agency and instead became the rare player to sign a third contract with the Ravens.
“That’s very important to me [to stay here]he said, adding that he would like to retire as Raven whenever that day comes. “I said I was very patient in this process and didn’t try to control things that I couldn’t control. … But it was very important to me, and I expressed that to them, to be able to stay here.”
He certainly made an impact too, more than his number on the field.
“Even as a rookie, he shaped my work ethic and maybe didn’t even realize it, just by watching him, lifting weights with him, watching the way he trained,” All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton said. “As a 21-year-old rookie, you’re the guy at whatever school you’re at, first round [pick]You see guys like that who are the best players in the league, working the way he works and it’s hard not to rub off on him.”
Likely echoed similar sentiments, noting that Andrews has influenced the way he takes care of his body, understands defense and doesn’t rely on athleticism and learning.
He also said there was still a lot to do, no matter how long they had been together.
“I just live in the moment, knowing that you have everything ahead of us,” Likely said. “We’re trying to win the Super Bowl this year, one game at a time, one opponent at a time and knowing that I’ll let the rest take care of itself.”
