The government and Conmebol took pieces after a cruel night in Buenos Aires

August 22 – President Chilel Gabriel Boric has slammed the handling of the security of Conmebol after violence fans forced the neglect of the Copa Sudamericana match between Independiente and Universidad de Chili in Buenos Aires.

The second foot clash was deferred in the 48th minute after supporting his rival clashed hard in the stands. In situations that shouted the inability and lack of common sense, fans of Universidad de Chile were positioned right above the Independiente home part, creating a situation written on it.

Local media reports fans throwing stones, toilet equipment, chairs, stone pieces, dirt, stun grenades and basically whatever they can get with each other. Violence increased in the second half when host fans stormed away, with one supporter reportedly fell from the upper holder and suffered injuries.

“What happened at the Avellaneda Stadium between Independiente and Universidad de Chili fans was wrong in many ways, from violence between supporters to irresponsible in the organization,” Boric wrote on social media.

The president prioritizes the welfare of Chili citizens: “Now our priority as a government is to know the condition of the Chili people who have been attacked, ensuring their direct medical attention, and guarantees that those who are detained have their respected rights.”

Boric added firmly: “Nobody justifies the death penalty without court. Nothing.”

Director of Universidad De Chile Daniel Schapira called it “Organizational Problem,” told Radio Adn: “This has turned into a circus … This is a social and cultural problem; this is more than just football.”

International Chili Felipe Loyola, who played for Independent, posted its destruction: “I still don’t believe what I witnessed today. This is not football. Sports are not violence.”

Conmebol blamed the cancellation of “lack of security guarantees” and referred the incident to their disciplinary committee. The match was abandoned by Universidad de Chile led 2-1 aggregate.

Violence of fans in South America is not new but chaos in Buenos Aries on Wednesday night underlines institutional failures to provide basic protection for supporters who come to support their club.
