John Carroll field hockey beats then-No. 14 Severn in the IAAM B title game, 1-0
It took just 49 seconds for third-seeded field hockey John Carroll to take the lead in its IAAM B Conference championship game with top-seeded Severn on Sunday at Stevenson University. But it took a tense few minutes to seal the team’s first league title since the 2022 season, with a 1-0 win.
Patriots junior defender Lily Welling scored the game-winning goal at 14:11 of the first quarter with a powerful kick on the game’s first penalty corner. Her killer shot deflected off Severn goalkeeper Caroline Davis and into the net to match John Carroll’s offensive output in two regular-season losses to the Admirals (11-2-3).
“We used a lot of grit, a lot of resilience,” said Patriots coach Amy Plotts, whose squad upset the top two IAAM B seeds to capture the program’s seventh overall league championship. “We watched a lot of film from last year and knew that we could win with stamina and consistency, and we did. (They) are a good group of girls.”
Welling almost scored again in the final seconds of the first quarter with another penalty corner, but his shot was deflected and ended up hitting the crossbar. It would be John Carroll’s last quality scoring attack as the Admirals dominated possession for the rest of the match but could not find the back of the house despite taking 14 penalty corners compared to their opponents’ three in the remainder of the match.
“I thought we came out really intense,” Welling said. “We knew we had to get it done early in the game… and we got a corner kick. It was great. I think at the end of the first quarter, I felt like it was halftime. It felt like the longest game of my life. We were really in control and did a really good job.”
After a more back-and-forth first quarter, Severn began to assert his will in terms of possession in the second, resulting in three penalty corners, but there were no clear-cut chances inside the cage. John Carroll (8-6-2) mounted several counterattacks, but they were also fruitless.
Severn dominated the second half, generating 11 penalty corners to two for the Patriots, but Welling’s defense of John Carroll, Jade Thames and Sarah Muneses, among others, provided few quality scoring opportunities for the Admirals. Severn’s few chances were shut down by Patriots goalie Josie Bianco, who stopped two clear attempts to start the fourth quarter and one a minute later to preserve the team’s third shutout of the postseason.
“It’s very frustrating,” Severn coach Giovani Gordon said of his team’s inability to score despite having the ball deep inside John Carroll’s half for most of the second half. “I think we played well. I think the first 40 seconds of the game, we weren’t focused. I don’t think this game defines us. I still think we proved that we are the best team in the league. I don’t think this 1-0 (result) defines who we are.”
Roland Park 6, Glenelg Country 2
Roland Park kicked off the championship on Sunday with a 6-2 win against top-seeded Glenelg Country (11-3), behind a fast start that gave the second-seeded Reds a 3-0 lead they never relinquished for the rest of the game. Alexis Russell, Caroline Jackson and Maddy Frieman each had two goals for Roland Park (12-6).
“I think heading into the postseason, the championship energy was really felt throughout the group,” Reds coach Elizabeth Blaum said. “A lot of good leadership and a lot of good buys along the way made it fun to keep building on it along the way. The first quarter wasn’t always the vibe for us, but we came out and scored three goals in the first quarter, so I think this crew knows they belong here.”
