MLS changed its calendar to align with Europe’s major leagues
November 14 – After two years of debate, Major League Soccer (MLS) changes its season dates to align with Europe’s major leagues, canceling its calendar year season in favor of a summer-to-spring schedule starting in 2027.
Before they make the switch – which MLS says is “one of the most significant developments in league history” – they will play a shortened transition season in 2027 from February to May, with 14 regular season games, the playoffs and the MLS Cup.
The 2027-28 season will begin in mid to late July 2027 and conclude with the MLS Cup Playoffs and MLS Cup in May 2028.
This new format will align MLS with opportunities in the global transfer market for both purchasing top talent into the league and maximizing player sales to non-US clubs.
Specifically, this will allow clubs to enter the transfer market and integrate players without mid-season disruption to club rosters in either the US or Europe.
It also allows MLS clubs and their owners to participate more meaningfully financially in the value chain of their player development process.
“The calendar shift is one of the most important decisions in our history,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber.
“Aligning our schedule with the world’s top leagues will strengthen our clubs’ competitiveness globally, create better opportunities in the transfer market, and ensure our Audi MLS Cup Playoffs take center stage without distraction. This marks the start of a new era for our league and soccer in North America.”
MLS said that aligning with international match windows would also reduce conflicts between MLS league games and national team call-ups, especially during summer tournaments. The Gold Cup, for example, the Concacaf men’s national team tournament is always played against the backdrop of MLS matches, often on the same match day.
The league said that with the MLS Cup Playoffs and MLS Cup now being played in May, they have better weather slots and can complete games without the distraction of the international match window.
“This change will also provide prime placement on the sports calendar, ensuring maximum attention and visibility for the league’s most important matches,” MLS said.
MLS said that research shows 92% of the soccer league’s viewers support the calendar change and fans believe the benefits will include improved player performance, better alignment with international competitions and a postseason in May.
