Reds Supporters Falter As Reds Show Signs Of Weakness
Liverpool’s current performance is really bad, especially in the Premier League.
The 2024/25 Premier League champions have failed to win any of their last five Premier League matches and have only collected four points.
The Reds are now in sixth place in the league standings with 36 points after losing 3-2 to AFC Bournemouth in their last match.
After their defeat, both Manchester United and Chelsea managed to overtake them by winning their respective matches.
Liverpool’s performance threatens to lose their place in the UEFA Champions League next season.
However, the way Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, their two stalwarts, fell from grace is something that really stands out.
Liverpool’s form: Premier League champions looking for a shadow of their former selves
Salah is in his ninth season at Anfield and has scored 250 goals in 423 games for the Reds.
The Egyptian King reached a fantastic milestone of 250 goals for the Reds about three months ago; However, since then, he has failed to score a single goal for his club and has been in the limelight more for his off-field issues with Arne Slot than for his on-field exploits.
The 33-year-old has only scored five goals in 22 games this season, which is certainly not the result the club expected from him.
He will be 34 in the next few months and has likely put his best years as a footballer behind him, which has seen Liverpool’s form dip in recent weeks, with their Egyptian goalscorer experiencing a bit of a drought.
Van Dijk is also in his ninth season at Liverpool and recently reached the milestone of 350 games for the club.
The Dutch centre-back has been perhaps the best centre-back in the world for over a decade.
However, as his memorable performance against Bournemouth showed, the 34-year-old has lost much of his ability as a centre-back.
Van Dijk was responsible for at least two of Bournemouth’s goals on the day and appeared to struggle to lead the defense by example.
The situation is made worse by the fact that neither Ibrahima Konate nor Joe Gomez has staked their claim to be his permanent defensive partner due to injury or lack of form. Thus, defensive problems have been the main reason for Liverpool’s performance.
Van Dijk is still a big threat in the air for defenders from set pieces, but it’s not enough. Liverpool currently does not have another defender who can walk and fill the position of the big Dutch player.

Liverpool form: What’s next for the Reds?
Arne Slot tried playing Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong on the right wing in Salah’s absence during AFCON, but to no avail.
The Reds do not have a left-footed winger capable of playing on the right side of the pitch other than Salah in their squad.
As a result, at the moment, they have almost no other choice but to play the Egyptian in that position regardless of his performance.
The poor state of the defense was even worse, as the Reds couldn’t even rest Van Dijk for a while.
Liverpool renewed Salah and Van Dijk’s contracts last year, which doesn’t seem like the best decision in hindsight.
Salah and Van Dijk have won two Premier League titles and one Champions League title with the Reds, but have done little to improve Liverpool’s form as the current Premier League champions are going through worrying times.
