Several Ravens players were ‘really helped’ in selecting Jesse Minter as coach
Eric DeCosta didn’t do it alone.
The Ravens’ general manager said Thursday that a “small group” of offensive and defensive players, many of whom are veterans, helped Baltimore select Jesse Minter to be its next coach.
“Their opinions are invaluable and very helpful,” DeCosta said at Minter’s introductory news conference in Owings Mills. “They come from different perspectives as players. The feedback we got from the candidates was fantastic.”
The roles of the players are not finished yet. DeCosta said the group also helps evaluate candidates for the team’s offensive and defensive coordinator positions as well as other roles on the coaching staff.
Minter’s hiring, announced last Thursday, marks DeCosta’s first head coaching search since becoming general manager in 2019. Although DeCosta was involved in the 2008 hiring of John Harbaugh as director of college scouting, the process was different. He led this.
Zoom interviews played a major role, allowing the Ravens to gather information quickly while broadening the range of voices involved.
“The integration of technology allows us to talk to more people in a very short time, which is both an opportunity and a challenge,” Ravens president Sashi Brown said.
Players participate in interviews in person or remotely. DeCosta declined to identify anyone involved, saying only that they were “veteran players who wanted to be part of the process.”
Owner Steve Bisciotti previously encouraged quarterback Lamar Jackson to take part, although it was not disclosed whether the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player participated in the interview. Jackson was not among the nine players in attendance Thursday.
“I think relationships take time, so you don’t become the head coach of the Ravens and expect to have a deep relationship with anyone,” Minter said of the star quarterback. “I just hope I can connect with him, help him become the best version of himself.”
DeCosta admitted that it initially took him some time to envision Minter, who worked in Baltimore from 2017 to 2020 as a defensive assistant and defensive backs coach, as a head coach. That perception changed as DeCosta gathered feedback from those who had worked closely with Minter, including Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz, who worked closely with DeCosta as Baltimore’s director of player personnel before landing in Los Angeles, and former Ravens safeties Tony Jefferson and Eric Weddle.

“Watching him last year … and seeing the defense, I was like, ‘Damn, this is a good team. This is a really good defense. Jesse does a really good job,'” DeCosta said. “I think it takes a whole process of gathering information and really eliminating all the biases that are in your head.”
Minter would not confirm the hire or a timetable for when the position will be filled. He said that the search for offensive and defensive coordinators “has been a long one,” and added that an announcement would come “in the near future.”
Amid their search for a head coach, the Ravens interviewed several suitable candidates for offensive coordinator, including former Commander offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, Rams passing game coordinator Nathan Scheelhaase and Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb.
Whoever is selected will play an important role in the Ravens’ future, especially in forming a working relationship with Jackson. The hire carries far more weight than the defensive coordinator’s decision after Minter said he would call out defensive plays.
With the hires to make up his staff, Minter isn’t just looking for schematic expertise. He explicitly said a player buyout was necessary.
“I look for leaders and connectors and relationship builders and schematic expertise, but most importantly, people the players trust,” Minter said. “According to me [we will excel] when they feel like it’s a collaborative thing, and they feel like it’s ours and not just the coaches’.”
