Severn boys basketball earned a 63-55 road win in overtime against Gerstell
Every time Severn and Gerstell meet, fans on both sides expect a close, physical battle between two hard-playing, well-coached teams. After all, it was just a few years ago that the two programs faced off for the MIAA B Conference title — the first back-to-back championship for the Admirals.
“Every time we play Gerstell, it’s a tough, drawn-out battle,” Severn coach Mike Glasby said. “I was so proud of our guys tonight.”
After Gerstell’s Grant Ray hit a pair of game-tying free throws – two of his game-high 36 points – to force overtime, Severn got off to a fast start in the extra period and pulled away for a 63-55 road win on Friday night.
“I’m a little disappointed that we lost the lead,” Glasby said. “But I was proud of the way we regrouped, put the defense together and finished the game strong in overtime.”
The 4-0 score going into the opening overtime reflected how the Admirals played all night. Glasby relied on contributions from everyone as he worked his way to victory.
With Sean Harvey struggling to find rhythm early on, DJ Lee took control of Severn’s attack from the opening tip. Lee and Ray traded baskets as the two started to get hot. In a first quarter full of missed shots, Lee earned the ball — and his coach’s trust — by remaining aggressive. Once he saw some shots fall, Lee cried as he tried to keep up with Ray.
“I’m always ready to go, so when I hit the first shot, it gave me more confidence,” said Lee, who finished with 25 points. “I try to stay aggressive and always play downhill.”
A 9-0 run in the second quarter gave the Admirals not only the lead but also momentum, as more players began to find their rhythm. For Severn, that spark came from Brody Durm, who took advantage of open looks and limited defensive attention. He hit some timely shots in what was perhaps his best performance of the season.
“I don’t usually hit as many shots as I did tonight, but I kept shooting,” Durm said. “I try to be the best person I can be for the team.”
The Admirals stepped up their defense after halftime, slowing down the Rays briefly and opening the second half on an 8-1 run. Grayson Skeeter made an impact on both ends, knocking the ball off the Falcons ballhandler and converting on a sneaky layup. TJ Jones entered the game and played with purpose, securing a crucial rebound that proved crucial and helping set up Harvey as he began to find scoring opportunities.
“They’re a tough team to guard,” Gerstell coach Jeff Cheevers said. “Even when you feel like you have to stop, they have so many weapons and options. However, I’m proud of the way we played and executed the defensive game plan.”
The win ended a long run for Severn, which had played eight of its first nine games on the road. Glasby said the demanding and unorthodox schedule is intentional, designed to prepare his team for another B Conference title defense. Friday’s win reflected that approach, and he believes the Admirals are still making progress.
“We have developed into a program that has pride, attitude and determination, even in the most difficult times,” Glasby said. “Now we look forward to that continuing.”
